Olive picking holidays can be found in a variety of areas of Italy, with Umbria, Le Marche and Abruzzi providing the best option. You can spend anything from a day to several weeks picking. Also as we did not work as a volunteer, you can choose between a luxury break or opt. This report explains how we went to a picking vacation in Italy volunteering with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers. Last November we Travelled to Umbria in Italy to begin a week’s ‘vacation’ olive picking.
Arranged our flights, having paid our money and boarded that now remained was for us to meet up in Spoleto station with our olive pickers. There were eight people on this holiday, most remaining for most people and a week novice Italian olive oil. Accommodation was in a gorgeous stone house which had been the home of the household working the grove. The evening air was scented with mint and thyme and although it was nearly dark when we arrived it was possible to make out the shape of the olive trees that surrounded us. An open flame and red wine had us feeling as we did start work it was time to get good nights sleep. The trees we were harvesting from were older ones that through lack of regular pruning had grown tall with age. We had a demonstration spread the nets carefully not as simple on sloping ground, as it seems Next arm yourself with a wide toothed plastic comb and rake the off the tree, hopefully into the internet and pulling off as few leaves as you can.
These Italian olives are grown for their oil, black and firm and very bitter – a disappointment for those amongst us who had believed you could eat them like apples right from the tree on our last day of fresh air, fantastic food and great wine, it was finally time to accompany our olives to the neighborhood frantic or olive oil. Here the olives were rinsed, pressed and the oil gathered for us. We all had got three liters of the cold pressed, organic extra virgin olive oil Back home that branded and was poured into bottles. Each meal because has been enriched by a drizzle of the yummy Italian olive oil on salads, breads, with pasta, with fresh potatoes, and alongside the wonderful flavor comes the pleasure of recalling the trees it came out of and understanding that we had been responsible for the olive picking ourselves. The weather in late October and November can be quite warm during the day. When deciding what clothes to choose you are best to pack a range of light layers that will keep you warm in the evenings but that you can shed as soon as you warm up olive picking.
